The One Thing You Need To Do To Feel Fully Alive!

Norman Doidge, author of the Brain That Changed itself once said: “We must be learning if we are to feel fully alive.”

Our plasticity and changeability is one of our greatest gifts. We have this ability to grow and transform into something new all the time. Yet adding to this, Tim ferris once said: “People will choose unhappiness over uncertainty.” I know this feeling well! For 26 years I stayed in a job where I felt like a square peg in a round hole. The fear of leaving that certainty was greater than the quest to be happy. As the years went by I was becoming more disenchanted with my life and the work that I was doing. It showed up in my work as I became sloppy and made many mistakes. Management weren’t happy, I wasn’t happy and a spiral started to happen.

I felt trapped and didn’t know how to get out of there. We create these perceptions of who we are based upon our life experiences. I’d been a broker for more than half my life, what else could I possibly do?! I felt an inkling of what I wanted to do but certainly didn’t feel qualified or capable of doing it. You know when you get that mental loop going round and round in your head that is sabotaging your life? This was me! I kept hitting a glass ceiling then sabotaging everything by making poor choices that hurt me and other people. Years went by with these patterns until the discomfort became so great, that I knew it was time I had to do something about this. I wasn’t feeling alive, and as Doidge says, if I wanted to feel alive, I needed to learn more!

In today’s world, technology is a blessing and a curse. We are now saturated in data, we have access to an unlimited flow of information available to us in the tiny gadget that fits in our palm. Yet on the flip side, we can learn anything, anywhere and anytime. I have coaching clients now on remote islands north of Finland, Venezuela, Mexico and South Africa! There is no limit to what we can learn- from advanced spiritual practices, entrepreneurial skills, computer programming, macrame and animal husbandry! Vishen Lakhiani said in one of his recent articles that: “the trend is clearly showing that more and more people are leaning towards becoming transformational consumers, and are more likely to invest a lot more of their time improving themselves.”

This is the time to give birth to a new you. Here at The Stillness Project we put transformation at the forefront of what we do. As you can see by our new website! We felt it was time for growth, for change and for the new site to really embody more of what we are. We hope you like it! When we resist growth we will stagnate. I Didnt Expect This To Happen When I Had A Phone Free Day

creativityI feel like Ari Gold from Entourage sometimes. Ari has an attachment to his body called a phone. He never goes anywhere without it. In every scene in every show it is in his hand. This is what my life is like at times. Now with new things like Instagram story being created, I’m being advised that I should be filming 6-7 times a day and posting it! Then there is Facebook, Facebook live, Twitter, LinkedIn, not to mention Whatsapp, emails, texts and Voxers to respond to.

Tired yet?? Welcome to life in the 21st century!

So feeling slightly overwhelmed by all this, I decided to research a day of completely not going near my phone to see how I felt at the end of it. What happened next surprised me.

See, what you are reading or looking at, like you are now, becomes the centre of your minds attention. It holds and owns your minds attention. You are reading these words that are coming out of my head, I type them into this blog and now your mind is placed upon them. So in effect, I have hijacked the centre of YOUR minds attention with MY thoughts and words. So while you are reading this, you are not reading or thinking about anything else. You are here with my thoughts, reading them. I have you. ?

This is happening all day long with our mind. While we read the paper, Facebook posts, Tweets, Instagram images, watching TV, even when chatting with friends. Our minds awareness has been occupied by something. So the question is, what if we remove all of that? What if there are no distractions like this for the mind? The mind will still be inclined to go somewhere; it will still feel compelled to be placed upon something. The mind is always looking for a focal point because this is what the mind does. So where to now for your mind?

Well this is what surprised me. Without something to distract it, my mind now had time and space to roam. There were no tight boundaries placed upon it like someone’s tweet or FB post. It could roam and wander wherever it wanted to go. And roam it did! I found that I had these very creative impulses and ideas bubbling up from that spaciousness. I had these great ideas for things that I wanted to do with my life. I cognised an entire teen meditation program which I called Chill Out Meditation, which I will be releasing soon. I had an idea for a book that I mapped out and then I cognised 5 out of 6 new modules for Year 2 of our Zen Academy For Transformational Leadership program. This was all in one day of not distracting my mind with somebody else’s thoughts!

Think of your mind like a little kid. These days we never let kids get bored. We are always distracting them with something, usually technology. When was the last time you heard a kid say “I’m bored.”?? We rarely do because we are afraid to let them get to that point. But look what happens when a child is in the bored state. Next thing you’ll find them building a cubby house out of pillows, or colouring in an old colouring-in book they found on their shelf, or making pretend mud pies in the garden. What happens? CREATIVITY. When there are no distractions, the mind will have the space to explore the infinite realms of creativity. The mind is no longer hijacked by someone else’s thoughts, it’s not pre-occupied by something else and is free to roam and explore the unlimited bounds of creative potential.

So if your life is directionless and lacking in spontaneity and creativity, perhaps give it some space for it to roam and be free. Don’t be afraid to let your mind be a little bored once in a while. You will be surprised by what happens next!

Here are some tips to help you create space for your mind:
1. Turn your phone off between 10pm and 7am
2. Leave your phone in your glove box while driving
3. Don’t look at your phone while walking
4. When in nature like the beach or park leave your phone in the car
5. If you are working out or exercising, try it without your phone
6. Try driving without the radio or podcasts on
7. Embrace silence rather than be afraid of silence.

Learn How To Manifest Abundance In All Areas Of Life

Sprout.The Law of Attraction and “abundance” are two concepts that have recently become quite popular as methods to help people get what they want in life. But do they really work? Maybe you know someone who is a master ‘manifester.’ That person can’t seem to stop attracting success, wealth, positive relationships, and happiness. It can seem as though he or she does it effortlessly, without consciously focusing on manifesting abundance. While it’s true that some people are born with this innate knowledge, that doesn’t mean this capability cannot be acquired throughout one’s lifetime.
How Does it Work? 

Manifesting abundance is a skill just like any other. If you can learn how to ride a bike or play a musical instrument, you can learn how to manifest. How successful you are at manifesting will depend on how much you practise and how effectively you practise. Having natural talent to manifest your desires also does not imply that you are better at it than someone else. In fact, manifesting is a way of thinking, and once you adopt that way of thinking it doesn’t matter if you had it all throughout your life or not. Whether you use the Law of Attraction consciously or unconsciously is irrelevant, so long you are seeing results.

So What is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction is a principle built on the supposition that we create our own reality. We attract those things that we ‘put out.’ What does this mean? Well, the simplest way of stating this principle is that like attracts like. If you are a happy, outgoing, and appreciative individual, with the frame of mind that you have all you need – then you will attract happiness, friends, blessings, and wealth.

Manifesting abundance begins with the right frame of mind. For this, you need to understand a principle called Stillness. The Stillness Effect is centered around mindful meditation, and how it can help you to overcome your own inner limitations and achieve abundance. When you regularly focus on quieting your mind, you teach yourself how to express gratitude, feel pure happiness, and adopt the right attitude to attract the things you want. The ‘Less is More’ Mentality

When you have the right mindset to manifest, you don’t focus on negative or defeating things. For example, instead of saying “I have so little” or “I wish I had this or that” you make yourself believe that you have enough. You go over the blessings that you have been given and try to feel real gratitude for those things.

When you are appreciative of all the things you do have, you will naturally act more like someone who is happy, successful, and fulfilled. You see your negative beliefs will naturally stand in the way of you achieving your goals. For instance, if you keep telling yourself “I have no money,” you will become ‘stuck’ in that situation. All you will experience is having no money, and all of your interactions with money will reflect your attitude towards money – that you don’t have enough of it.

But, using the principle of manifesting abundance, you can take on the attitude that money comes and goes, that you don’t need to cling to the money you have because there is always more to be had. This doesn’t mean spending your money recklessly; instead, it’s finding the optimum balance between saving your money and spending it on things that make you or others happy. Having a positive outlook on the future – that money will come and go but ultimately your happiness won’t be affected by it – can also help you to manifest financial abundance.

Ultimately, manifesting abundance is all about how you see yourself in the world. If you believe that you are worthy, that you are entitled to having the things you want (with a little hard work of course), and that good things will come to you because you are a good person, then that will be your reality. But, your mind is behind these attitudes and opinions. The first thing that you need to do to inspire this kind of thinking is learn how to eliminate self-defeating thoughts. Through my entire high school experience I had body issues. I was a skinny, freckly, pasty kid in an all boys agricultural college that specialised in rugby league. Needless to say, the majority of the students were big strapping farmhands or huge footballers built like sides of buses.

I would get teased about how skinny I was with comments like:
“Cronin, you look like a matchstick with the wood carved off it!”
and
“Cronin, do you run around in the shower to get wet?”

Tapeworm was one that also stuck.

I did everything I could to put on weight, and probably ate twice as much as most kids but all to no avail. And so, I had to live with being the skinny, freckly, pasty kid at school. It was a struggle I dealt with for most of my youth. It’s ok now, Im over that issue and moved on 🙂

Body image is a HUGE issue in our world today. Studies reveal that 10% of teenagers suffer from some form of eating disorder and a study done at the Council of Size and Weight found that 90% of teenagers want a different shaped body.

We struggle so much to accept this amazing vehicle we have been given. For 70, 80, 90 or even 100 years your soul will be carrying around this human space suit so that you can exist here on this planet. It’s a remarkable piece of equipment. It digests food, has a heart that beats, has blood pulsing through it, lungs that pump air, eyes that can see, fingers that can feel, ears that can hear. It can scream, and laugh, and cry and orgasm…wow! Isn’t it amazing? And there is not one of them in all the 7 billion of them on this planet that is exactly the same…amazing right?

10 Steps To Build Your Confidence

Are you looking for confidence builders that really work? Confidence is a tool that can help you to overcome obstacles and leave a lasting impression. And the best part about confidence is that it rubs off on others. When you’re confident about what you’re saying or doing, you’ll come off as intelligent, successful, capable and even desirable. Confident people have no trouble attracting others.

Of course, even people who are regularly confident experience spells of low self-esteem or insecurity. The important thing to remember is that if you find yourself feeling unusually down, it’s doesn’t take much to give your confidence level a boost.

The following confidence builders can help you stay steady and self-assured:

1.Peel yourself away from the mirror. Yes, you should devote some time each day to your appearance, but once you’re ready, let that be the end of it. Most of us have difficulty staying away from mirrors when we encounter them in elevators or bathrooms, but the less time you spend agonizing over every detail of your appearance, the happier you’ll be.

2.Stand behind your decisions. Instead of humming and hawing over miniscule decisions or jumping back and forth trying to decide what to do, try making a decision and going with it. This doesn’t mean you should start behaving rashly, but people who are confident and self-assured tend to know what they want.

3.Work on your posture. Your mom probably told you when you were a kid to stop slouching and she was right. When you stand tall, with your shoulders back and your head held high, the impression you

Who cares if your best friend is getting engaged or your neighbor just got a promotion at work?Dwelling on what others have achieved isn’t going to help you feel good about yourself, nor is it going to help you get ahead.

5.Do things alone. It’s easy to feel sure of yourself when you’re out with a group of people or a boyfriend or girlfriend. But doing things alone can leave you feeling outside of your comfort zone. Try doing things alone every now and then to cultivate your sense of confidence.

6. Practice meditation. By making your mind Still, you can filter out defeating thoughts which can contribute to low self-esteem. Twenty minutes twice a day can have a profound effect on your confidence.

7.Exchange online social networking for face-to-face social networking. Do you spend hours clicking through photos of your “friends,” analyzing their outfits or who they’ve been clicked with? Instead of wasting your time online, why not get out and socialize yourself? Putting yourself out there and meeting new people can help you to feel more confident about yourself.

8.Make eye contact. Confident people aren’t afraid to make eye contact. When you’re talking to someone, practice staring that person straight in the eyes. You’ll give off the impression that you’re sure of yourself, confident, and intelligent.

9.Dress your best. If you feel good in whatever you’re wearing, you’re more likely to convey that message to others, too. Instead of going out in your old pair of sweat pants, put some effort into your appearance each time you leave the house. You’ll find that spending just a few minutes on your outfit will help you to step out with confidence.

10.Feel wealthy. Take the time to remind yourself of all you have. You may not be the richest, the most successful, the prettiest or the smartest but isn’t it better to just be yourself? When you appreciate the blessings you do have and stop being in a state of wanting, you don’t need to feel down about what you don’t have.

How To Create A Vision Board And A Magnificent Life!

 

vision-board-2014-crossfit-round-rockFor the past few weeks I’ve been re-assessing my Vision Board. I visit this regularly and check it is up to date and aligned with my vision for life.

What’s a vision board did I hear some of you ask?

Some of you will not only know of them, but actually use them. One friend of mine told me that she manifest everything on her vision board this year!

So a vision board is a large board with affirmations or images of things that you would like to manifest in your life in the year ahead. Each morning and night, as you rise and as you go to bed, you look at this board, feel the energy of the images or affirmations and then let it go.

How does it work? Well by looking at the image and feeling the energy of it, this leaves an imprint of it embedded into your body. By letting it go and not being attached to it dissolves the neediness and the “wanting” which would normally push the vision further away from you. What’s important here is to not ‘wish’ for the outcome, but to feel what it feels like for the outcome to have already happened.

The laws of attraction will simply do the rest. You’ll be quite amazed at how Nature, The Universe, or whatever you’d like to call it, effortlessly goes about creating circumstance that enables the manifestation of your visions.

It can be anything from where you’d like to be in your career, relationships, wealth, living environment, level of consciousness, amount of love or happiness you are feeling, or state of health.

Think of it like the captain of the ship knowing which port he is going to before he embarks upon his trip.

So how do you want life to pan out? Where do you see yourself in 12 months time? How would you like your life to change? Because it’s going to change, that’s one thing you can be assured. It’s a matter of how much do you want to play a role in it ?

How To Dissolve FEAR From Your Life

I have something that I have to tell you. I recently experienced F.E.A.R. Yes, it’s true! Now for many of you of this may not seem that unusual. I mean everyone experiences fear at some point in their life right? But you see, I am a meditation teacher, and I’ve been practicing meditation twice a day for 17 years. What I teach is a technique that reduces F.E.A.R. And yet after all these years, I recently came down with a case of it. It wasn’t fun.
 

What is F.E.A.R.? Future Events Appearing Real. It is a removal from the present. It’s a mental projection into the future, into an imaginary event. So there I was, in sunny Fiji with my lovely family having a wonderful holiday. The fresh warm air rustling among palm trees, warm sun on my skin, the pacific ocean lapping at my toes, delicious food, lots of lightness and love. I was present; there was nothing but the now. Nothing but the sheer simplicity of being there, right there, in sunny peaceful Fiji. My world was bliss.

And then it happened. I was removed from the present and projected into the future. That’s when the F.E.A.R. arrived. You see it was triggered by three events in the space of about 2 hours all revolving around my future career prospects. To let you in on the situation there is some vulnerability about my day job, as many other people are experiencing in the world today. While I was in Fiji I received some phone calls and messages from friends that have had their world turned upside down as their careers and financial stability were removed from them. This triggered my mind to suddenly run rampant with all these imaginary scenarios and then wham! That was it; I was removed from the present and propelled into some un-real future!

What then happened? My entire holiday changed, well for a few hours anyway as I to grappled that mind of mine back from its very creative thinking process. I felt heavy, I felt scared, I felt withdrawn and low on energy. I lost that spark and fun playfulness with my family. I was no longer present and reveling in the deliciousness of what was all around me. This is the power of F.E.A.R. It has such a strong vortex that it will totally distort your present situation. How many times have you been lying in bed at night, all snug and cozy under the doona, your head on a soft pillow, your present moment totally safe, warm and nurturing, and yet you are off in some future event that totally removes you from the now? Your whole physiology shifts. You can’t sleep, your heart races, your skin crawls, you get hot, uncomfortable and you are deprived of sleep? Sound familiar?

Unless you are being attacked by a sabre tooth tiger or a marauding tribe, there is a good chance that your present moment, that is, what your senses have to offer you, is absolutely fine and beautiful. Most of our fear-filled scenarios never actually happen and yet we spend so much of our time in our mind projecting into the future.

So how did I deal with this F.E.A.R.? Firstly, meditation. This technique holds the key to being present. The simple repetition of your a mantra will quieten that busy mind and settle it back into the present. Secondly, outside of my meditation, I brought more attention to what my senses were detecting. What was I hearing right now? What was I seeing right now? What was I tasting right now? What was I smelling right now? What was I feeling right now? By bringing my attention to my senses it brought me back to the present. I went from these imaginary scenarios in the future that were totally unreal, back to Fiji, back to the paradise around me.

Aaah, the simplicity and lightness of right now. Out of the mind and in the senses, in the NOW. Free from F.E.A.R. I was in heaven again. Heaven on Earth.

Confessions Of An Addict

Hi, my name is Tom Cronin, and I’m an addict.

There you go, I have said it. I put it out there, and it’s true- I’m an addict. I’m addicted to my Iphone, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, emails, texts, Voxer and Viber. I’m addicted to social media. I’m addicted to social interaction.

Last week I took this photo. It was a line of people queuing up for the bus at Bondi Junction. All twenty of them had their head down engaged in their smart phones. I thought to myself “Wow, look at all those people addicted to technology; addicted to their phones. I’m going to take a photo of that and post it on Instagram!”

And that’s when I had the epiphany. That’s when the light went on and I realised- “Holy smoke! Hang on a second, I’m one of those people too (as I typed away on my phone adding the photo to IG!!)”

It was there and then that I made a decision. I had to make some changes. I needed to some how cut back on my addiction and deal with this. I can’t go on at this rate of checking my phone every few minutes. So I decided the first thing I would do is dedicate one day a week to being Iphone and laptop free. The best day I felt for this was Sunday. This made sense as it was always meant to be a day of rest.

Well that day has now passed and I have to say, it was AMAZING!! I loved it. There was a real shift. I tell you it was a very tangible difference to my day with the phone off and hidden in a cupboard. I felt more connected with nature, more present, more engaged with the moment. No one could contact me and I couldn’t contact anyone else. I have to tell you it was weird driving and not checking my phone at the traffic lights. I felt liberated!

Here’s the interesting thing, the world was still there when I came back. Nothing had changed. Billions of data bits were still swirling around in the virtual world with or without me. All I’d done was step off the merry go round for a day and had a rest from it. Like an information holiday! I had an amazing day. I went to yoga class, then meditated after that on the beach, had a big family breakfast, then a lunch for Father-in-Laws birthday. I rode skateboards, jumped on a pogo stick and shot hoops with my kids, then we all meditated and had dinner and read books. Pure, wholesome, simple, and darn good fun!

So I’ve decided that one day a week I am going to go technology free. No phone, no laptop, no media (newspapers included). I feel we are at a tipping point. We have only had Iphones since 2005. So in 7 years in the entire history of mankind we have become totally addicted to this information absorption! Where does it go from here? How far into this hunger for information can we go? If this is where we are now, where will we be in another 7 years? Or even 20 years? Can we cope with that much information? Or will we see more people like myself start to pull back, and return to basics?

The big question is, are you an addict also? Do you need to start addressing this problem? Here are some questions for you.

  • Do you check your phone at traffic lights in your car (or worse, while you are driving!)?
  • Do you take your phone with you to the toilet?
  • Do you check your phone during meals?
  • Are you sneaking out of meetings, functions or dinners to check your phone?
  • Do you leave your phone on at night and answer any texts or calls that wake you up?

If you answer yes to 1 or 2 of them you may want to start to assess your situation. Is your phone ruling your life? Are you being distracted from the immediate world around you? Do you want to join me in the information revolution? Give it a try, just for one day a week and see how different it feels. I dare you!

5 Tips On How To Stop Sabotaging Your Life

I’m reading a great book at the moment and I couldn’t help but feel like sharing some of the revelations that I’ve had from it with you.

How many times have you gone from having amazing moments in your life only to be followed by some disaster? Like having a beautiful nurturing relationship with someone only to have it abruptly end in fighting. Or being in optimal health only to then go and get sick or injure yourself. Or perhaps having lots of money only to find yourself badly in debt and struggling to make ends meet.

The book was called The Big Leap by Gay Hendrickson and suggests that we all have an Upper Limit Barrier and when we hit this upper limit in our life, we start a process of self-sabotage because we simply don’t believe that it’s possible to have greatness in our life for a sustained period of time.

You’ve been told that life has ‘ups and downs’ right? This concept is so deeply ingrained into us that when we have an up, we just inherently know that following that will be a down. So we subconsciously start to do things that will take us off that high and drop us into one of those ‘downs’.

This was like a lightbulb moment for me because I realised I had done this all my life. I would have these amazing bursts of wealth creation only to then go and blow it all and lose it. Or I would reach a peak level of fitness and then go and get sick. It was like I was the one creating the ‘ups’ AND downs’ all along.

We do this on an individual level, national level and global level. We have times of prosperity then times of recession. We have times of peace then times of war. We have big deep connections in our relationship then break ups.

What if we changed that belief system and embraced another paradigm. What if we didn’t have to have the ‘downs’ after the ‘ups’?

WHOA!! That is totally out there!

How do we prevent ourselves from sabotaging our life when we are on an up so that we can go from a ‘down’ to an ‘up’?

Here are some simple tips for you to prevent you from sabotaging those great moments in life:

1. Believe that you are worthy of sustained greatness. Yes, you! It is possible and you are worthy. Start with this belief system.

2. When you are having a ‘wow’ moment, start to observe if you are sub-conconsciously looking to find a flaw somewhere in the situation. Then pause and re-direct your attention back to the goodness in that moment.

3. Each day spend a little bit of time going over each portion of your life, from health, wealth, relationships and life purpose and imagine the feeling of what it is like for each of them to be flourishing.

4. Things will change in life, relationships will change, careers will change, however when you are open to the idea that this change is an opportunity for an ‘up’ experience it usually will become one.
