Stuck on the True Meaning of Life?

Do you ever stop to ask yourself what your life’s purpose is? Do you ever wonder what you’re doing here or whether or not you’re making a tangible difference? If you do, you aren’t alone. In fact, it’s quite human to ponder and pine for the true meaning of life. In fact, we’ve been philosophizing on the meaning of life for hundreds of thousands of years, and guess what? We still don’t have any concrete answers.

Perhaps that’s because ‘meaning’ is all relative. In fact, we can choose to give meaning to the various people, situations, places, and things that we encounter throughout our lives. For instance, think of one of your friends. Think about the first time you met that person. At that time your friend was a stranger to you. You might not have placed any significance on your interactions. But now, think about the time you’ve spent with that person. Somewhere along the line you recognized that you enjoy that person’s company, you value his or her opinion, and you want to preserve the relationship. Whether unconscious or conscious, you made a choice to give those various meanings to your relationship with your friend. Had you never decided to place value on the relationship you have with that person, he or she would have remained an acquaintance.

You have tremendous power to choose the various meanings you want your life to have. If you don’t believe that the people and events that you encounter are worthy of meaning, then your life will have no meaning. If you are ready to give meaning to your relationships with others and if you see the things you do as meaningful then your life, in turn, will have meaning. It’s that simple. The following are just a few of life’s many pleasures that have the ability to make your life more worthwhile:

• SPIRITUALITY: The gift of spirituality is something that is in general, poorly understood. So many of us go through life failing to recognize our capacity as divine beings. But in the midst of suffering, we often find ourselves searching for a crutch – something to help us explain what we are going through and understand the bigger picture. That’s when spirituality comes into the forefront. But you needn’t wait until you experience something major to start cultivating a healthy and meaningful sense of spirituality. Through Stillness, you can get started today.

• LOVE & RELATIONSHIPS: It has been said that “A life without love is a life not worth living.” It’s perhaps true that the relationships we will have throughout our lives have the most potential to enrich our lives with profound meaning. As humans we are social creatures. We need to interact with and learn from others in order to survive. The film Into the Wild, which is based on the true story of a man who rejects societal values and chooses a life of solitude in Alaska, is a powerful reminder that a life devoid of relationships is an empty one. Prior to his death Christopher McCandless, the main character of the film, writes a journal entry stating that “Happiness is only real when shared.”

• GOOD HEALTH: It takes as little as a common cold or flu to make you realize how important your health is. Spending one or two days down with an illness is enough to help anyone recognize just how wonderful it is to live a healthy life. If you think that your health is out of your hands, you’re wrong. Only you have the power to improve the quality of your own life by engaging in healthy habits. By exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and taking care of yourself, you show your gratitude for good health and reduce your risk of contracting an illness or falling prey to a disease.

Five Quotes to Illustrate Your Purpose in Life

What is our purpose in life? Many people will ask themselves this question, but very few will actually realize the answer. When it comes to understanding why we are here, perhaps it’s best to learn from those who have gone before us. The following quotes are tidbits of inspiration to help you on your way to understanding and realizing your own individual purpose in life.

DREAMS

Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today.

– James Dean

We all have dreams. Whether you aspire to run your own business, become a parent, or fight for human rights, you alone have the power to realize your dreams within your lifetime. If you want your life to feel worthwhile and ultimately purposeful, you need to think about what you want to accomplish and start working for it today, because who knows what tomorrow will bring.

PRODUCTIVITY & SUCCESS

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”

– Swami Vivekanada

Living a purposeful life doesn’t necessarily mean being conventional in the traditional sense, but feeling as though you accomplished something you are proud of. If you are passionate about what you do, success will follow naturally.

You may have goals already, but until the time you learn how to become totally focused, you won’t be able to achieve them. You need to learn how to quiet your mind by limiting the number of distracting thoughts that enter your head – something that can be accomplished through mental Stillness. When you clear your mind, you instantaneously understand how to go about doing all the things you want to do, and you’ll feel purposeful in the meantime. Take some time to find out about the Stillness Effect to learn more.

BEAUTY

“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind.”

– Ashley Smith

If you’re in tune with beauty, you will lead a beautiful life. We live in a world full to the brim with goodness. When you take the time to find joy in small places, you can come to understand the precious and fragile nature of life, and you can take your purpose from there. Whether or not you believe it, you’ve been blessed with so much. All you have to do is look around you to realize just how much you’ve been given.

LOVE

“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”

– Albert Einstein

If we’re not on this planet to love, then what? Love is powerful beyond belief. Just think of the special feeling you get when a friend makes you laugh, or how profoundly meaningful it is to become a parent and watch your children grow up and carry out their lives. The relationships we have while we’re here are the pinnacle of our purpose.

SUFFERING

“Perhaps our eyes need to be washed by our tears once in a while, so that we can see Life with a clearer view again.”

– Alex Tan

It is not our purpose in life to suffer; still, suffering is an inevitable fact of our existence. No one person is spared from pain – not the wealthiest businessman, nor the world’s most famous celebrity. Broken relationships, death, job loss, illnesses both mental and physical, and loneliness are just a few of the afflictions that can befall us as we move through life. Learning how to cope with the difficult things that transpire is our challenge here on Earth.

Ask Yourself: What is My Purpose in Life?

download

These days it’s easier than ever to get caught up in a lifestyle that’s centered around achieving success and acquiring wealth. Family values and fulfilling relationships have been replaced with iPads and fancy cars. Indeed, our society is hell-bent on promoting the idea that money buys happiness and those that don’t have money aren’t able to experience all that life has to offer. While it’s true that money can help you to lead a life that is comfortable, it certainly isn’t everything. Life is too short to waste time doing things that don’t allow you to grow as a person. Although we all desire money and success, if you don’t enjoy what you do it’s not worth it in the long run.

At times in life we’re forced to evaluate exactly which direction we’re headed in. There may be mornings when you wake up and you feel compelled ask yourself what is my purpose in life? Certain events can cause you to give some thought to exactly where you’re going and why you’re going there. For instance, the death of someone close to you might cause you to let go of a grudge you’ve been holding against someone you once loved. Or, getting laid off from your job might inspire you to go back and pursue the degree you always aspired to get. Emotionally traumatic events such as breakups or divorce can also cause you to re-evaluate who you are as a person and how much or little you’ve grown over the years. All of these experiences are inherent our existence as humans.

But really you shouldn’t wait until you’re forced to make a dramatic change in order to evaluate what is important in your life. You can do it anytime. Simply picture the day of your funeral. What will people say about you? What contributions will you have made to improve the lives of others? And what would be the most important thing to you if you were facing death – is that what you’re doing right now?

It can be overwhelming to realize that you need to make some changes in your life. Perhaps you haven’t been the best parent or you would like to cut back on the amount of time you spend at work and increase the amount of time you spend giving back. It doesn’t take much to set yourself on the path towards changing your life for the better, so that you’ll leave behind a legacy when you go.

Of course, this change isn’t going to come just like that. You’ll need to slowly work on making changes to your lifestyle to add meaning. This can be achieved through the practice of Stillness-centered meditation. The Stillness Movement is a shift towards mindfulness, inner peace, and personal development. Through Stillness Sessions, you can learn to quiet your mind. You’ll gain the ability to see your life for what it is, and recognize the things that you enjoy the most. Stillness allows you to understand the purpose of your life.

Find Your Purpose

Perhaps you’re not happy where you are right now, but you don’t know what it is you truly enjoy. Sometimes a person needs to get out in the world and find his or her purpose. Through life experiences like traveling, people are able to gain clarity and see the world in a new light. In the grand scheme of things you’ll realize that it doesn’t matter how much you have or what you do, so long as you are happy and you can take some meaning out of each and every day.

Don’t wait until your life gets shaken up to evaluate you purpose. The next time you ask yourself what is my purpose in life, try to make your mind Still and listen to the ideas coming from your source. When you practice Stillness your mind becomes quiet and nagging thoughts are filtered before you become consciously aware of them. It’s only at this particular state you that can see your life clearly and really understand what you need to do to gain meaning.
