How To Make Your Problems Seem Really Really Small

I was chatting with my son this morning about a problem he was facing and our conversation inspired this article.

You see I was sharing with my son something that I do when I feel life is a little tough and I’m feeling challenged by something.

I told him how I go out onto the balcony of our house at night and I look up into the night sky at the stars. I told him how in the night sky there are shimmering stars and static stars. The stars that don’t shimmer are planets reflecting the light of our sun. However the shimmering ones are other suns in our galaxy just like ours. Yep, tiny little balls of fire that are all burning themselves out.

There are estimates that within our galaxy alone, there are over 200 billion suns just like ours. Some of them have little balls of dust floating around them just like ours does (Yes, I’m talking about planet Earth). Now on one of those little balls of dust, floating around one of those 200 billion tiny sparks in our galaxy, is you and me.

Here’s the amazing thing with this, there are estimated to be over 100 billion galaxies in our Universe.  So 100 billion galaxies, with each of them possibly 200 billion suns. How many tiny balls of dust called a planet does that make?

It gets even more fascinating. Some of those suns, by the time their light from the flames gets within our eye sight, have already burnt out and don’t exist any more.  Just like a spark that jumps out of the log fire burns out in due time as the energy has been expended. The light is still travelling, and yet the source of the light is not longer there.

He looked at me with fascination and it dawned on him how small and how short-lived all this is. I said to him that out of all the dust balls we have been able to observe with our Hubble Space telescope, we haven’t seen one yet that has butterflies, trees, waterfalls, birds, beaches, art work, movies, animals and human beings like ours yet. Out of billions of them, not one has this rich beauty.

Isn’t that amazing???

I told him how its such a gift to be here right now, in this moment. It won’t last, our sun will burn out and our dust ball will be sucked into the vacuum of the black hole. This is the golden jackpot that we are here now, in the billions of human years, me and you son, are here right now.

What a gift.

Interestingly enough, after that his problem didn’t seem to be as big an issue any more.

How This One Instagram Post Changed My Life!

universe-mindI have to share with you that lately I was feeling some resistance and friction in my life. Not what you’d expect from a meditation teacher but yep, I became attached to outcomes and the more I forced things to happen, not only did I move further away from it happening, but I actually found there was more turmoil and friction occurring in my life. Interestingly enough this caused me to TRY even harder to make things ‘work out’ and of course what happens? Even more craziness! I was getting tired, frustrated, and yep, even sick!

Then one day as I scrolled through my Instagram feed looking at plenty of wings of planes with fluffy clouds in the background, sunrise shots of Bondi Beach (Oh wait, that was mine! :)), people performing yoga poses, and some organic, gluten free, dairy free, yeast free, sugar free salads they had made, I came across one that said “The Universe Has Your Back”. Hey I’ve seen this one numerous times before with very little impact, but today it spoke to me. BOOM!

It was what I needed to hear at that point in time.

How could I doubt that things aren’t working out?
How could I doubt that there isn’t a beautiful sequence unfolding that will continue to unfold that is serving my higher purpose?

How could I doubt that there isn’t perfection in this imperfection?

And so I paused and meditated.…..Tom, stop TRYING, stop CHASING, stop FORCING.

Let it come to you….

This Universe has been expanding and contracting and will expand and contract for infinite time. For a glimpse I am me, Tom, in this space to explore, learn and play, and yet, I’m part of this Universe, no, I AM the Universe simultaneously. How simple. I am part of that continuum. How beautiful.

Wow, the relief, the freedom, the ease that came after this.

There is an old Vedic saying:

“Take it as it comes, and as it comes, take it.”

Note it didn’t say “Go after it, and if you don’t get it, try harder?”

If you feel there is friction in your life, if you feel you are TRYING hard to make things work, then…

Let go of the attachment and watch how things unfold. You’ll find life will become lighter, smoother and you’ll be smiling a lot more 🙂

Have you had any moments where you let go of your attachment and things unfolded gracefully after that? I’d love to hear from you awesomeness!

A Fascinating Clip That Will Put Things In Perspective

Have you ever noticed what happens when a 3 year old drops their ice cream on the ground? The huge emotional response is equivalent to bereavement of the greatest kind!

It’s like a global travesty and yet as adults we observe this with gentle nurture: “Oh there, there poor darling, it’s going to be ok.”

Now if it was a 40 year old man that had such an emotional response to a spilt ice cream we would have serious concerns about this person’s well being!

So why the difference in perspectives?

We generally accept that the two will have different states of awareness and therefore have very different expectations about how each of them should respond to life’s ups and downs.

The Universe is observer dependant, so the world we experience is through the lens of our own consciousness. Is spilt ice cream a tragedy? Well that depends on the observer. How aware we are, how conscious we are, will determine how we respond to the variables of life.

Here is an amazing clip made in the 70’s that takes you on a trip out into the cosmos to give you a perspective of how small you are, and how big the Universe really is.
