Your Personal Health and Wellness Guide

In fact, physical, occupational, social, mental/emotional, and spiritual are the most important domains of health. If you’re concerned with your own well-being, you need to take a proactive approach in each domain.
1. Physical Health: Do I have to go to the gym?
Does anyone actually like going to the gym? If you do, that’s great – keep it up. If you don’t, you need to realize that there are a ton of other things you can do to stay active – you don’t need to waste your time running to nowhere on a treadmill. In the twenty first century, we’ve lost touch with what it means to be active. You don’t need to buy fancy equipment or a hefty gym membership. What you do need to do is try to find activities that you enjoy and incorporate them into your lifestyle. Try joining an adult soccer league or going to a yoga class once a week. If you’re busy, you can try making healthy habits part of your routine. For example, biking to work a few days a week, or always taking the stairs, or going swimming over your lunch hour. It doesn’t take much to stay healthy and fit, without having to put in time at the gym.
2. Occupational Health: Who wants to work?
Work is always a drag, right? Wrong. If you don’t like what you’re doing, why waste your time? Life is short, and we can guarantee you that staying in a job that is unchallenging or unfulfilling is a choice that you will regret in the long-term. Don’t you want to spend what little time you have here doing something that makes you jump up and down with excitement? You spend a huge chunk of your time at work, therefore if you don’t like what you’re doing, your health will be more likely to suffer.

3. Social Health: Love, actually?
The relationships that you have are extremely important. The interactions you have with others will ultimately bring enrichment and fulfillment to your life, but only if you are willing to put into your relationships what you want to get out of them. Every relationship you have, including romantic relationships, familial relationships, and friendships, is a two-way street. You have to be willing to give and share yourself in order to get the same in return. The types of relationships you have throughout your life can either help or hurt your overall health, so it’s important to make sure the people you spend your time with nurture you with positivity.

4. Mental & Emotional Health: Singing the blues?
Just as your body needs fuel to stay healthy, your mind needs nourishment to provide you with an output of positive thoughts and emotions. If you are prone to neglecting your emotions or thinking pessimistically, you are actually at an increased risk of developing mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, and physical health problems such as decreased longevity. Maintaining a positive frame of mind can also help you to cope with the stressors you will experience throughout your life and keep your emotions in check.

5. Spiritual Health: Are you there, God?
Your spirituality is an integral part of your personal health and wellness, and sooner or later you will have to address it. We all neglect our spirituality from time to time, but when we are forced to experience suffering, that’s when we seek assistance from a divine presence. With faith, you can endure all things, but sometimes it takes some active effort on your part to find those beliefs within yourself. Stillness can help you to acknowledge your spiritual side. How To Stay Happy Around Unhappy People

Let’s face it, when you’re happy it’s no fun being around unhappy people and when you’re unhappy, it really sucks being around happy people. Do you recall those feelings of repulsion when you are in your sombre state of misery and your friend comes bouncing in the room telling you to cheer up? Then next thing you see their inspirational quotes on Instagram plastered over a stock image of a sunset telling you how amazing life is! Ewwww…puke!

The flip side to this is when you are the one bouncing into the room feeling like you could burst with joy, which of course you can’t help but tell the world about and ol’ misery guts over there in the corner starts niggling away at you trying to do their damnedest to make you feel like crap with them.

There’s a simple reason for this- UNITY. All of your relationships thrive on having unity and they deteriorate when there is disunity. When there is unity, you have connection. When there is dis-unity there is disconnection.

Unity comes in many ways. For instance, you both like surfing, you both like films with Ryan Gosling in them, you both like yoga, you both like green smoothies…..lots of unity there!

But dis-unity happens when you like going to bed early at night so you can rise with the sun to meditate and ‘they’ like to stay up till 2am playing Assassins Creed on X-box drinking cans of Red Bull! Eeeek! You start nagging them to stop doing what they are doing which they see as criticism and then they attack you for undermining their choices in life and the friction escalates.

We see these very principles play out between family members, friends, religions, political parties, races, countries, and through all sports. You are Islamic, we are Christian; you are Republican, we are Democratic; we are Android, you are Apple; you are dark, we are pale; you are Afghanistanian, we are American; you are Manchester United, we are Liverpool FC.

Relationships are about two different teams seeking unity. When someone joins our team we are like YES! We have a new member. They are one of us….woohoo!! When someone leaves our team to be part of the other team we are like….oooh, they aren’t with us any more! They are one of those ‘OTHERS’!

In all my time mentoring people one of the biggest challenges I see people face is when the happy, calm team gets attacked by the unhappy, angry team as they try to sign up more members. Being happy annoys the unhappy people like crazy and they want more members on their team to feel better about their position. So if they can convert the happy people to be unhappy, then success! More members mean more validation about being unhappy and angry.

Step back and observe. Everyone is seeking unity, but you have to ask, at what price are you prepared to have a unified experience with them? You get to choose which team you get to play on. You can choose, in that moment, do I join their team as they try to create a situation with me so that I’ll also be angry and unhappy, or do I choose to hold my space and with loving kindness, and choose to remain on my team?

5 Tips To Overcome The Distraction Contagion

I have to share this experience that I had while I was eating my lunch on Sunday. The reason that I feel I have to share it with you is because the insight taught me so many things that I am sure you will relate to you in your life.

It’s ok though, you and I aren’t alone. I am seeing the same thing everywhere and it’s a chronic disease! I call it the Distraction Disease and I tell you, this thing is contagious and spreading like another global viral bug.

So there I was, eating my lunch on a nice lazy Sunday afternoon. I was pushing the food into my mouth and scrolling through the news feeds on Facebook on my iPhone while I was eating. It’s not often I have time to go through the feeds but thought since I am just sitting there, I may as well see what everyone was up to.

I read about how someone was going to the markets to buy groceries in their boots, how someone had just moved house and loved it, and how someone’s daughter had just played a piano piece. On and on it went….through the news feed I devoured this information while I was shovelling food into my mouth.

And then it happened…I paused, took a breath and then looked up from the Facebook page. I was amazed at what I saw. There before me was a stunning site. You see I live on a hill and have this stunning view over the city of Sydney. The city was covered in clouds and my rooftop garden that I looked across was lush and wet. The water on Sydney harbour was steely grey and very still.

It was one of these dreamy days where the air is warm and thick, but it was rainy and grey. There wasn’t a breath of wind outside and I could hear the drops falling on my tin roof.

How could I have been ignoring this?? Then it also dawned on me as my senses started to awaken, that I had also been ignoring the incredible food that I had cooked and was eating. I didn’t even know what it tasted like I was so distracted. So I stopped, I regathered and went through my five senses. What was I tasting, seeing, touching, smelling and hearing?

Mmm…yes! There was so much beauty around me but I had temporarily caught the Distraction Disease and wasn’t taking it all in. Now after pausing and re-grouping I became present again. The food tasted so much better, I felt calmer and more engaged in the now. I could feel the food nourishing me, I delighted in the sounds of nature dropping on my roof and the sight of the clouds floating by. Bliss filled me. I was aligned again.

Here are 5 tips on how to shake off the Distraction Contagion:

1. Above all, meditate! Meditation helps you be more present throughout the day. It also trains you to observe your mind rather than BE your mind. I recommend 2 meditations per day for 20 minutes each.

2. Yoga. 1 – 2 yoga classes a week is a really good way to align your breath, mind and body into one unified present experience. Forget if you can touch your toes or not, who cares! It’s all about if your mind, body and breath are connected.

3. When eating put away all technology. If it’s there at the table, the sweet lure of information will suck you in easily.

4. One screen policy. In our house we have a one screen policy. Ie. No iPads, iPhones or laptops while watching TV or any other double or triple combinations of screening!

5. Conscious Nature Walks. It doesn’t matter where you live you should be able to find somewhere that you can take a slow conscious walk amongst nature. Even if it is a local park. Stop, look at a leaf, smell a flower, watch an ant, feel the breeze or look at the clouds.

The Distraction Contagion is an epidemic now. But you can get your vaccination and avoid catching it if you follow these 5 steps above. I Broke All My Rules And Paid The Price…

stillness-project_001I usually have set rules about my daily routine that I have in place because I know when they are there, life flows beautifully. But in the last few weeks I broke those rules and it was great research, because everything about my day changed. This was a great reminder about why I put those rules there in the first place!

Do you get those times when you feel overwhelmed, or that you just have so much ‘to do’ you are not sure where you’ll get the time to do it all? Or that things just aren’t flowing and there is friction and tension in your life? It’s easy to get pulled into the whole ‘doingness’ of life. For that reason we put aside very little time for the ‘beingness’.

What is beingness? It’s simply being present, in your inner stillness and calm, not needing identity, or definition from results. Its a deep comfortability in knowing that everything is going to turn out just right.

This is a very subtle experience and easy to ignore because the success of our results overwhelms the subtlety of the doing. Hence we will compromise important things like, meditation, pausing when eating, exercise, stretching or sitting on the grass looking up at the sky.

This is what happened to me lately. I bent my rules and paid the price. Some of my rules are:

– no technology after 10pm

– start the day with stretching and meditation (preferably at the beach)

– having a siesta and afternoon meditation

– being present throughout the day

– placing my attention on the single task at hand

– stretch and read before bed

– acknowledge the future will unfold gracefully and effortlessly

– eat slowly and consciously

I know that if I apply these simple guidelines, my days will be a blissful effortless experience that leads to more blissful effortless experiences under the laws of attraction. But lately I had some big deadlines and I was working till midnight then getting up at 5am to do more work. I skipped my morning routines, I ate food as if it was getting in the way of my ‘doing’, I was multi tasking like driving and checking phone calls, and I allowed my mind to project forward into ‘what if scenarios’.

What happened then was a series of comical events. Firstly small things like stubbed toes (sign of not being present), and not sleeping well, to eventually things like technological failures, missed meeting times and an over stimulated mind that starts to drift towards a negative forecasting. All this of course continues that snowballing effect of getting attached to your outcomes and the out comes then not gracefully unfolding.

When we entertain ‘neediness’ into our life, it totally changes the outcomes of your day. Sure, we need to perform action, but when you perform action from that place of peace and calm, then the results of your actions will be very different. There is a Sanskrit saying ‘yogasthah kuru karmani’ which means ‘established in being, perform action’.

When you do, life will be timelessly in the bliss of the present moment. Needless to say, after my research was complete I returned back to my rules and have a beautiful meditation by the sea this morning.
