The One Thing You Need To Do To Find Happiness

happinessYou want happiness right? Isn’t this what drives us in all of our actions? Well you’re about to find out the one thing that you need to do to find happiness and why for most people it’s incredibly hard to find.
It’s deeply programmed into our psyche that getting happiness comes from getting ‘things’. If we aren’t happy, then we need to get more ‘things’. If you have the ‘things’ you thought would bring you happiness and you still don’t have happiness, then you simply go out and get MORE ‘things’. This is what they called ‘shopping therapy ‘ right?

A while ago we surveyed our audience to ask them what they were looking for most. We had a huge response and what we received astonished us. Our audience mostly wanted to manifest more wealth, then after that they wanted to have healthy, loving relationships, then the next highest, in third place, was to find their life purpose and a successful career. In fourth place was happiness. WHAT??? FOURTH!??? Seriously?

Then we delved deeper into the psychology of this and we realised that those surveyed most probably felt that if they had 1, 2 or 3 then they would find happiness anyway. They no doubt thought getting those ‘things’ would lead to happiness, which is why happiness was further down the list.

The challenge with trying to get those things is that it can exhaust us. More and more in today’s world we are trying harder and faster to get those ‘things’ and in the process we are getting highly stressed. I presented a talk the other day in front of 220 people and I asked them to be very honest with me and put up your hand if you were stressed, tired, anxious, or depressed. Guess how many put up their hand? About 90% of the room!

Here’s the catch, in the process of trying to get the ‘things’ we have become exhausted and stressed, which ironically prevents us form feeling happy when and IF we do get the ‘things’. The greatest barrier to you feeling happy isn’t whether or not you get the things, its STRESS. Recently I had a stress response in my body because of some circumstance that I was facing. Immediately I noticed that my whole body shifted. The feeling of lightness and happiness dissolved and fear and anxiety kicked in as my body was flooded with biochemical’s of adrenalin and cortisol. It’s a beautiful design by our body to protect us from danger. Your body will shut down happy biochemical’s like serotonin and produce fight-flight biochemical’s like cortisol. WHOOSHKA…. there goes happiness. The two cannot co-exist. Nup, not possible. Unlike Abott and Costello stress and happiness don’t go together.

So if you are struggling to find happiness in your life, the first step would be to eliminate the stress response. Please note, I didn’t say eliminate the thing that you feel might be causing the stress. This doesn’t mean get rid of your partner, your job or your latest wardrobe, it means getting rid of the response that your body is having to the circumstance, whether it is the past, present OR future. Stress is a response in your body and it’s something that with mindfulness, strategies and vigilance, you can eliminate.

Here are some strategies that can help you eliminate the stress response in your body so that you can coherently and non reactively make smarter choices about the direction of your life.

1. Reduce the amount of screen time on your smart phone. (How can a smart phone create stress? Its constantly overstimulation your nervous system making it less resilient and more reactive to when situations arise that are challenging.)

2. Take time out each day to pause, and let your mind, body and nervous system recalibrate. This can involve sitting in the sun, lying on grass, being in Nature and just pausing

3. Being physically active. Burning up that adrenalin through a big work out, run, swim, or bike ride is a great way to eliminate stress. We are living very sedentary lives by sitting at computers all day and then going home and sitting on the sofa. This is a sure fire way to build up cortisol and adrenalin and increase stress. Daily physical exertion is a great antidote to stress.

4. Sleep. LOTS and LOTS of sleep! Yep we are so sleep deprived it’s just not funny. Most of my students fall asleep in their first few meditations because their bodies are SO tired. 7-8 hours a night minus and if possibly naps in the day or weekends plays a big part in eliminating stress. Ideally shut off all technology and get to bed by 10pm at latest for a good nights sleep.

5. Stretch. Stress tightens the body and this compounds the stress response in the body. It’s like a snowball effect. Stretching and yoga play a big part in opening up the body, releasing tension and overriding that fight flight response in the body.

6. Meditation. Whatever your practice of meditation is, doing something is better than nothing. Even if it’s for a few minutes throughout the day. Ideally if you can find a deep transcending style meditation with a mantra that will take your mind and body into profoundly deep states of rest will be very effective in eliminating stress from your life.

Happiness is available to you, however stress will be the greatest barrier to you finding it. You can have all the ‘things’ you ever wanted, but if you are stressed, forget being happy about it! It just won’t happen. Get rid of the stress response in your body and watch how much better you will feel in life. Small things like the warm sun on your cheek, a hot shower, a cup of tea or a hug from your kids will bring you sheer delight when there is no stress to impede it. Why? Because your happiness is inside you and those simple things remind you of it.

How Tearing My Meniscus In Yoga Taught Me A Big Lesson About Life

saddleI love yoga. It enhances my life in so many ways. There is so much evidence supporting the huge benefits of it from increased flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone, improved respiration, energy and vitality, maintaining a balanced metabolism among many more.
 

However my relationship with yoga changed dramatically one evening during class. I have a competitive nature, so when I would see people in class turning themselves into pretzels I have to admit, I did have a slight twinge of envy. I’ve been teaching meditation for many years now and yet there was a part of me that still couldn’t help but push myself that extra bit harder trying to reach that lofty goal- ‘If only I could get into lotus, then I would really look like a meditation teacher!’

After doing regular yoga for twenty years now, unbelievably I still have tight hips and knees that can only manage a cross-legged seated pose that has my knees protruding substantial high! Which reminds me of the years of sitting on the floor in school assembly halls and having to wrap my arms around my knees to hold them up because it was so uncomfortable.

Then it happened. One night in class the yoga teacher at the front announces the next asana. Saddle Pose.

“Oh great” I say to myself. “I get to stretch out those tight knees of mine and inch closer to lotus!” I watch the room of mainly women effortlessly lie back horizontally on their shins and throw their arms over their head. Easy right?? I sit back on my shins and then lean all the way back. My hip-flexors are screaming at me. My lower abdomen muscles are shaking. My quads are burning with fire, and there is a sharp pain in my knees.

I’M STUCK!

I can feel the pain in my knees increasing. Its like a nail has gone in there. My whole body is now aching and I am sweating! I don’t know how to get out of this position. I precariously push my hands to the floor and slowly raise myself out of the asana. It’s not good.

The weeks that followed were frustrating and painful. I hobbled everywhere and couldn’t attend yoga. No more surfing, no more gym, even meditating it was painful. MRI’s confirmed the meniscus was torn. I had a choice, to be glum, dark and suffer, or look deeper into this and ask a question. Every experience of life is research and development. This is the mechanics of evolution. What information was this experience offering me that will help my life going forward?

I was so fixated on the outcome in class that I was ignoring the process. It was the subtlety of the process that had all the information in it that I needed however I had closed my intuition off and pushed through that to try to reach my goal. Snap! Amazingly I had been doing this not just in yoga, but in life also. Do you notice how what you experience on your mat can be a representation of your life also? I decided it was time to start listening more. It was time to have intentions in life and on my mat, but not be attached to them. Observe the goals, yet be more present to the now. It was time to listen to the subtle information in each moment and as they say, ‘stop and smell the roses.’ It’s great to have goals and set our sights on the myriad possibilities of life, however within each moment there is a quiet simplicity that is bursting with knowledge.

These days, I’m back on the mat and loving my yoga, although when I do saddle pose, I use two bolsters and three blocks! It looks like a construction site! But I’m ok with it. Oh, and I have completely surrendered the need to ever get into lotus. Phew, that feels good…such a relief!

Simple Routes to Spiritual Transformation

We tend to talk about spirituality a lot, but what do we actually mean? In some cases, it’s a reference to your soul or your own inner being. It’s that part of you that is independent of your physical existence: the essence of your you-ness and the guiding light that motivates you to be better. If you find yourself on the wrong path – like so many of us do from time to time – spiritual transformation is your route back to happiness, contentment, and fulfillment in life.
 
In the modern era, people are taking their spirituality into their own hands. Today, we’re more likely to search for our own answers to spiritual questions than to try to use religion to explain those things that trouble us. The best part is that there are so many ways to actually explore your own spirituality; you can try as many methods as you like in order to find the one that works the best for you. So long as you are devoting time to developing yourself as a person, you’re sure to feel the inspired as you lead your purposeful life.

What are some of the most common spiritual practises? The following activities can help you to get in touch with your own spirituality:
• Prayer. The act of prayer is common to many of the major religions around the world, which can be done communally or individually. When you pray, you are trying to converse to some greater power or deity, and your words may remain silent in your head, they may be spoken out loud, or they may be sung or chanted. Prayers can take the form of requests for guidance, praise and worship, confession of sinful acts, or expressions of gratitude.

• Yoga. Yoga was originally sourced from Hinduism, but since its ancient origins it hasbeen incorporated into Eastern religions including Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It has also spread throughout the west as a tenet of new age spirituality. Yoga connects the body, mind, and spirit through specific postures.

• Meditation. Meditation is the cultivation of the mind and it is also a main tenet of many Eastern religions. However, meditation is now being practised all over the world by people who are looking to put an end to their mental unrest, feel real happiness, and find inner Stillness. The incredible popularity of meditation is probably due to the fact that it’s a flexible practise that can be practised pretty much anywhere. The individual need only be committed to the goal of achieving spiritual transformation.

Other spiritual practises include vegetarianism, spending time outdoors, fasting, pilgrimages, and attending religious ceremonies. But how do these practises actually change you for the better?

How Spiritual Practises Can Change You
Perhaps you’ve tried praying, practising yoga, or meditating, with little or no success. Don’t be afraid to admit it if you’ve been intrigued by one or more of the above-mentioned spiritual practises, but never really saw results you expected. Well, the truth about nourishing your spirituality through these activities is that the changes you see in yourself won’t happen overnight. It takes repeated effort in the long-term to really see yourself being spiritually transformed. Once you are committed to your goal of making a change in your life, it can’t hurt to access the resources that are available to you.

Why Your Spiritual Practice Could Be Holding You Back

If you have a daily practice, be it meditation, prayer, yoga, or a religion of some sort, there is every chance that it is holding you back from realising the entire grandness of who you are.

Think of your spiritual practice like a cast on a broken leg or arm. (Please bear with me while I labor on this metaphor). You have a bone that is damaged and needs stability to allow it’s natural healing process to repair it. Remembering here that it’s not the cast that is repairing the bone, all the cast is doing is creating a stable environment so that the bone will do what it is capable of doing, healing itself.

But you get excited by this cool looking cast. It’s your point of difference to everyone else. You show it to people and even get people to draw on it and write on it. It grabs a lot of attention wherever you go, with many people starting up conversations about this new thing in your life. You openly tell everyone about how you had this damaged bone; you go into the intricate details of how you broke it, and how this amazing cast is healing your bone.

Over time though, the bone heals, and it’s time to take the cast off and let go of all the attachment to the cast. Its task is complete and it’s not longer needed. But you love this cast. You have people’s names on it and you become so attached to this incredible thing that healed your bone. You don’t want to let go of it, and you want to keep it on. After all, it saved your arm or leg right?!

So you keep it on, and overtime it becomes infected. You get sores and wounds appear beneath the cast. You still refuse to let it go, after all, the cast saved you! Now it leads to a major infection that turns to gangrene. But this cast saved my arm, and now my arm is infected!? How can this be so? Isn’t my cast the saviour? How could this be??

Many of us require stability and guidance while we heal and find our essence. These structures, like our spiritual disciplines or sadhanas, our gurus and sages, are there for precisely that reason- to help us go within, to help us repair physically, emotionally and mentally (I don’t say spiritually because spirit is never damaged or broken). They help us reconnect to our Divine Grace. Sounds woo woo perhaps, so let me rephrase that. Within you is the essence of love, the same essence of love that is in your gurus, religious leaders, yoga teachers or idols. They may have the ability to remind you, guide you and help you feel secure and stable while you reconnect to this inner fire. But nonetheless, it’s ALWAYS within you.

I need to add here, I’m not advocating walking away from daily meditation, yoga, prayer or religion. I have my daily practice of stillness, stretching and contemplation and always will. But if we continue to always put ourselves below our practice or gurus, then we will never fully Self-Realise the magnificence of who we are as a Soul. Your tradition or religion is a structure. It maybe a very relevant structure that supported you and carried you through a difficult time. But whatever greatness and love you found in that structure, it is within you also. At some point, (is that now?) we have to realise that we are ALL OF IT too.

6 Tips For A Magnificent 2016!

It’s hours away here until the close of 2015. What a year! No doubt you have experienced twists and turns with some incredible highlights and also some challenging times. This is life yeh? It moves, it ebbs and flows; it will be ecstatic at times and painful at times.

This time of year can be a time of sadness for some and for others an exciting time of growth and cleansing. I was out surfing the other day and I over heard one of the surfers say to another one:

“Mate I just can’t wait for this year to end!”

Must have been a tough year! However wishing time to pass quickly because life is unbearable will not create any new experiences going forward. It will only attract the same experience just with a different calendar. So how do we create a magical 2016? Well it’s yours right now to create. A blank canvas for you to design an awesome life!

Here are a few tips for you to build your foundation of a magnificent year ahead:

  1. Let go. Let go of the pain, the anger, the regrets, the suffering and the stories of the past. It’s time to look forward and not back. Holding on to grudges, and ‘should have’ stories won’t serve you in 2016. Let’s shrug it all off, shake it away and let go of that load of heaviness. 2016 is all about being light!
  2. Be thankful. No matter where you are in life, there is always something to be thankful for. When we acknowledge the beauty of life around us, it changes the way we feel, and when we change the way we feel, we change what we attract.
  3. Commit to something new. Yep, I started last night. I was asked what is my new year’s resolution and I was stumped, because I didn’t have one! So I decided my new year’s resolution would be to write in a notebook each night before I go to sleep all the things I was grateful for that day, and just that day. I was amazed at how many things I found to be grateful for and how good I felt to write them all down. So this is my ‘NEW’ thing for 2016. (Which ties in well with number 2) What will your ‘NEW’ thing be for 2016? Yoga twice a week? Meditate each day? Do an act of kindness each day? Attend a retreat? Please tell me below this article, we’d all love to hear and get inspired!
  4. Set your goals for 2016! The captain of the ship always has their port of destination in their sites. Do you know where you want to go? Do you know what you want to do? Get clear on these goals and write them down. This is something we will be covering at our 1 day Urban Retreat & Vision Day on Jan 16th if you need some assistance with this.
  5. Choose excitement over fear. You can fear what’s ahead or be excited about what’s ahead. You get to choose. Fear and excitement are very similar feelings, with a very slight shift. One is positive and one is negative. One is contraction, and one is expansion. Fear moves you away from something, and excitement moves you towards it. “I’m afraid of speaking on stage”- CONTRACTION. “I’m excited about speaking on stage”- EXPANSION. Get excited about the life ahead!
  6. Love. No, not ‘I need you’ love; not ‘I can’t live without you’ love; not ‘I hope someone will love me’ love. This is a love that is found deep in your heart. It’s there right now. It’s a radiant burning glow of fiery love right in you NOW. Seek and you will find. Get out of your head and into your heart and radiate love. This will totally change your 2016 BIG TIME!

We Have A Problem..But There’s Good News TOO!

After my recent travels of late, and meeting a diverse cross section of Australia’s population, it became more apparent to me than ever that we have a problem. A BIG PROBLEM!

In numerous conversations with people in the last 2 weeks, it was revealed to me the extent of how many people are relying on drugs for sleep, anxiety, depression, cholesterol and countless other imbalances. When I asked them what they were doing different other than taking the drugs to remove the imbalance they looked at me with rather bewilderedly.

It’s not their fault, just as I had once done the same. Why? Because I relied on the perspective of the ‘authorities’ that told me this was the best thing for me to do. These guys had done 6 years of medical school right? So they knew what they were talking about. Right?

You have high cholesterol…take a pill.
You have insomnia…take a pill.
You are anxious….take a pill.
You aren’t happy….take a pill.

I even met one woman whose 19 year old daughter was on three different medications for anxiety!

Then I started thinking, if I met this many people in the last 2 weeks that are like this, then how many more are like this across Australia, Canada, USA, UK, China and on and on? It dawned on me that we have a major problem that is perpetuated but the medical and pharma industry. The exciting thing about problems though is that there is always a solution. All that is needed is a little creativity.

I once suffered with many of these imbalances myself, and I discovered that the solution required adaptability. I had to change the model to change the results. I learnt that if I did the same thing over and over again, took a pill, and expected a long term sustainable change, that I was kidding myself. I had to make wholistic changes to my life to expect different results.

My major discovery was that I had simply become imbalanced in my lifestyle, and this resulted in an imbalanced biochemistry and body. When I rebalanced my lifestyle I rebalanced my biochemistry and body. It was simple. I see this time and time again with students of mine. Like Claire who was suffering post natal depression and anxiety for 2 years. Once she changed her lifestyle slightly, the post natal depression and anxiety went away.
She says:
“I am SO THRILLED with the difference it has made to me after suffering from post natal depression and anxiety for the past two years. I am finally enjoying life again.”

So what changes can we make to bring balance back to our mind and body? Here are some tips that could help you get back on to the road of a drug free life that is light, happy and calm:

1. Meditation. Yep this is the biggest and most effective change I’ve seen in my life and my students lives by far once they embrace twice daily meditation. If you aren’t meditating yet and would like to learn then click here.

2. Diet. Our brains are being starved of nutrition because we eat so much food that is devoid of nutrients and minerals. It doesn’t have to be fancy or have any labels to it like ‘paleo’’, ‘vegan’ or ‘raw’. I just keep my eating simple. Wherever possible I eat organic, free of dairy, processing, sugar, gluten, alcohol and caffeine.

3. Strengthening and stretching. Every day I’ll either stretch (yoga) or strengthen (gym workout). Admittedly a most yoga classes will combine both, however I do love my yin yoga which is more stretching.

4. Upgrade your software. Buddha once said “What you think you become.” If you have negative, fearful, angry, or sad thoughts, then this will transfer into your body. Read inspiring positive books, attend positive inspiring talks and workshops, be around positive inspiring people.

5. Be with nature. Every week I will take time out to spend time in nature. Either by the sea, in a forest or in a park. Even just lying on some grass and feeling the support of the Earth below me and looking at the sun and clouds above me creates a huge shift in how I feel.

This is a great foundation for bringing balance back into your life. It never ceases to amaze me how simple it is. But one thing I realized is, it’s requires a holistic approach. If someone tells you they have a magic bullet, the solution to your problem, (and admittedly, many doctors currently believe their little pills are it), then do a little more research. Because we don’t want you ending up like the lady I met last week who was taking sleeping tablets for the last 8 years as prescribed by her doctor!

4 Steps On How To Live More Spiritually

Many people have a goal of becoming spiritual, but how does one actually go about doing it? We are all able to grow without exerting any specific efforts, because as humans we have been given the drive and motivation to evolve, overcome, survive, and ultimately thrive as we move through life. Spiritual and personal growth often happen naturally.

So, should you be concerned about who you are spiritually? Or where you’re at in your life when it comes to what kind of person you want to be?

Actually, there are a lot of reasons why you should take an active approach to your own spiritual practice:
• Developing your spirituality helps you to expand your awareness as a person and ultimately contributes to personal growth
• Spiritual growth in particular is your way of getting in tune with the larger universe and seeing life from a broader perspective – this can help you to achieve peace and contentment
• Learning about spiritual practices can help you to uncover new aspects of your personality and can challenge you to understand different ways of life other than your own

When you decide to improve upon or develop your spirituality, you are making a commitment to understanding your own inner nature. However, simply saying that you want to be more spiritual will not get you anywhere. Just like you need to exercise and eat a balanced diet in order to lose weight or maintain your health, you also have to ‘practise’ your spirituality in order to become spiritual.

Meditation and Spirituality
Meditation is becoming more and more popular as a means of helping people to nurture their spirituality. People who meditate practise getting in tune with their own inner self on a regular basis, and a spiritual presence or a feeling of being connected to the divine follows naturally.

Four Steps Towards Greater Spiritual Growth
You can use these four simple steps to get on the right track when it comes to inspiring personal growth.

1.Read spiritual texts.
Even if you’re not religious, texts like the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana, Yoga Vashishta or the Qur’an contain valuable messages that can help you to learn more about your own existence, your inner self, and the divine presence. Remember that underneath every religion is a desire to improve mankind, and although certain religious groups have strayed from that path at one point or another, you can still use religious works to nurture your spirituality.

2. Attend public celebrations of spirituality.
Once again, even if you’re not religious, religious ceremonies, group meditations and public celebrations can help you to see the bigger picture. As humans, we all have an innate desire to connect to a higher power and to find that source within our lives. When you go to a temple or attend mass with your family on a regular basis, you will feel like you are a part of something much larger than yourself. Choose a form of public worship that works for you.

3. Practise social justice.
There is nothing like spending your time helping others to make you feel more whole. When you volunteer or take some time out of your day to do something for someone other than yourself, you will stop seeing the world in terms of your own selfish needs and wants. You are able to open yourself up to new possibilities and give of yourself without expecting anything in return. Your contribution to the world doesn’t have to be gigantic, so long as at least one person is affected by your kindness and compassion.

4. Pray and meditate.
Meditation and prayer are two routes to the same goal of spiritual and personal growth. When you meditate you connect your inner self with a higher power and when you pray you speak directly to the same presumed higher power. Both of these practises can help you to focus your attention on your relationship with God and try to find contentment in your life. Practising Stillness will help you to focus on this goal through meditation.

A Simple Tip On How To Go Deeper In Your Meditation

Do you find that some meditations are quite challenging and feel very busy?

Or perhaps you just can’t seem to go deep and feel unsettled for a lot of your session?

5 Tips To Overcome The Distraction Contagion

I have to share this experience that I had while I was eating my lunch on Sunday. The reason that I feel I have to share it with you is because the insight taught me so many things that I am sure you will relate to you in your life.

It’s ok though, you and I aren’t alone. I am seeing the same thing everywhere and it’s a chronic disease! I call it the Distraction Disease and I tell you, this thing is contagious and spreading like a global viral bug.

So there I was, eating my lunch on a nice lazy Sunday afternoon. I was pushing the food into my mouth and scrolling through the news feeds on Facebook on my iPhone while I was eating. It’s not often I have time to go through the feeds but thought since I am just sitting there, I may as well see what everyone was up to.

I read about how someone was going to the markets to buy groceries in their boots, how someone had just moved house and loved it, how someone had just missed their plane and had to wait in the terminal for 4 more hours, and how someone’s daughter had just played a piano piece. On and on it went….through the news feed I devoured this information while I was shovelling food into my mouth and down into my gut.

And then it happened…I paused, took a breath and then looked up from the Facebook page. I was amazed at what I saw. There before me was a stunning site. You see I live on a hill and have this stunning view over the city of Sydney. The city was covered in clouds and my rooftop garden that I looked across was lush and wet. The water on Sydney harbour was steely grey and very still.

It was one of these dreamy days where the air is warm and thick, but it was rainy and grey. There wasn’t a breath of wind outside and I could hear the drops falling on my tin roof.

How could I have been ignoring this?? Then it also dawned on me as my senses started to awaken, that I had also been ignoring the incredible food that I had cooked and was eating. I didn’t even know what it tasted like I was so distracted. So I stopped, I regathered and went through my five senses. What was I tasting, seeing, touching, smelling and hearing?

Mmm…yes! There was so much beauty around me but I had temporarily caught the Distraction Disease and wasn’t taking it all in. Now after pausing and re-grouping I became present again. The food tasted so much better, I felt calmer and more engaged in the now. I could feel the food nourishing me, I delighted in the sounds of nature dropping on my roof and the sight of the clouds floating by. Bliss filled me. I was aligned again.

Here are 5 tips on how to shake off the Distraction Contagion:

1. Above all, meditate! Meditation helps you be more present throughout the day. It also trains you to observe your mind rather than BE your mind. I recommend 2 meditations per day for 20 minutes each.

2. Yoga. 1 – 2 yoga classes a week is a really good way to align your breath, mind and body into one unified present experience. Forget if you can touch your toes or not, who cares! It’s all about if your mind, body and breath are connected.

3. When eating put away all technology. If it’s there at the table, the sweet lure of information will suck you in easily.

4. One screen policy. In our house we have a one screen policy. Ie. No iPods, iPhones or laptops while watching TV or any other double or triple combinations of screening!

5. Conscious Nature Walks. It doesn’t matter where you live you should be able to find somewhere that you can take a slow conscious walk amongst nature. Even if it is a local park. Stop, look at a leaf, smell a flower, watch an ant, feel the breeze or look at the clouds.

The Distraction Contagion is an epidemic now. But you can get your vaccination and avoid catching it if you follow these 5 steps above. I Broke All My Rules And Paid The Price…

stillness-project_001I usually have set rules about my daily routine that I have in place because I know when they are there, life flows beautifully. But in the last few weeks I broke those rules and it was great research, because everything about my day changed. This was a great reminder about why I put those rules there in the first place!

Do you get those times when you feel overwhelmed, or that you just have so much ‘to do’ you are not sure where you’ll get the time to do it all? Or that things just aren’t flowing and there is friction and tension in your life? It’s easy to get pulled into the whole ‘doingness’ of life. For that reason we put aside very little time for the ‘beingness’.

What is beingness? It’s simply being present, in your inner stillness and calm, not needing identity, or definition from results. Its a deep comfortability in knowing that everything is going to turn out just right.

This is a very subtle experience and easy to ignore because the success of our results overwhelms the subtlety of the doing. Hence we will compromise important things like, meditation, pausing when eating, exercise, stretching or sitting on the grass looking up at the sky.

This is what happened to me lately. I bent my rules and paid the price. Some of my rules are:

– no technology after 10pm

– start the day with stretching and meditation (preferably at the beach)

– having a siesta and afternoon meditation

– being present throughout the day

– placing my attention on the single task at hand

– stretch and read before bed

– acknowledge the future will unfold gracefully and effortlessly

– eat slowly and consciously

I know that if I apply these simple guidelines, my days will be a blissful effortless experience that leads to more blissful effortless experiences under the laws of attraction. But lately I had some big deadlines and I was working till midnight then getting up at 5am to do more work. I skipped my morning routines, I ate food as if it was getting in the way of my ‘doing’, I was multi tasking like driving and checking phone calls, and I allowed my mind to project forward into ‘what if scenarios’.

What happened then was a series of comical events. Firstly small things like stubbed toes (sign of not being present), and not sleeping well, to eventually things like technological failures, missed meeting times and an over stimulated mind that starts to drift towards a negative forecasting. All this of course continues that snowballing effect of getting attached to your outcomes and the out comes then not gracefully unfolding.

When we entertain ‘neediness’ into our life, it totally changes the outcomes of your day. Sure, we need to perform action, but when you perform action from that place of peace and calm, then the results of your actions will be very different. There is a Sanskrit saying ‘yogasthah kuru karmani’ which means ‘established in being, perform action’.

When you do, life will be timelessly in the bliss of the present moment. Needless to say, after my research was complete I returned back to my rules and have a beautiful meditation by the sea this morning.
